Standards & Certifications
Independent verification is preferable to self-declaration. The following frameworks are commonly referenced for bio-based content and end-of-life claims. This page provides a neutral overview; Biofoam Alliance does not itself issue certifications.
Bio-based Content
- ASTM D6866 — Radiocarbon analysis to determine the percentage of bio-based carbon versus fossil carbon.
Industrial Compostability
- EN 13432 — European standard for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation.
- ASTM D6400 / D6868 — North American specifications for plastics designed to be composted in municipal or industrial facilities.
- OK Compost INDUSTRIAL (TÜV Austria) — Certification mark based on EN 13432.
- BPI — Biodegradable Products Institute certification (primarily North America).
Home Compostability
- OK Compost HOME (TÜV Austria) — Lower temperature, longer timeframe protocol.
Foam-specific Programmes
- CertiPUR-US — Has introduced biobased foam certification (minimum bio-content threshold plus existing low-emission and restricted-substance criteria). Administered by a nonprofit.
- CertiPUR™ (EUROPUR) — European voluntary health & safety programme for flexible polyurethane foam.
Certification scope, test conditions, laboratory accreditation and any limitations should be stated clearly when claims are made. Different markets recognise different marks.
