Bio-based Content
Bio-based content is the proportion of carbon in a material that originates from renewable biological sources rather than fossil carbon. The internationally recognised method is ASTM D6866 (radiocarbon analysis).
A stated percentage is only meaningful when the test method, the basis of calculation, and the scope (product vs. polymer vs. foam) are clear.
Higher bio-based content is not, by itself, a quality or environmental performance score. Performance, durability, safety and full life-cycle impacts must still be evaluated.
Why Percentage Alone Is Not Enough
- The calculation basis must be stated (polymer only, finished foam, or including additives).
- Test method and laboratory accreditation matter.
- Bio-based content does not determine end-of-life behaviour.
- Performance requirements of the application remain primary.
